It's Time...To Do As I Say, Not As I Do

I usually use a photo, video, or meme to illustrate my topic, but in searching for one, each seemed to give off a different message. Sorry.
I've certainly witnessed turmoil in America, but nothing that matches what I'm seeing today. Personally, I've felt anger and frustration, and even have had trouble sleeping. I started thinking of ways I could address these feelings and came up with the following (keep in mind that some have worked and others I haven't even tried).
Recognize that extremists on both "sides" of our political differences are not going to be part of any solution. This includes those who make threats, commit violent acts, or who are unable or unwilling to understand the viewpoints of those they disagree with.
Ease up on your screen time regarding "news". Block as many news channels as you dare on your phone and other devices so you're not bombarded with news 24/7.
This one's really hard. Try to look at a few news stories or videos supporting positions that you don't agree with. Apple News on my IPad, for example, has articles from a wide range of viewpoints. You may have to hold your nose, though, or take a shower afterwards.
This may be obvious, but have conversations with people you disagree with politically, but on topics that are unrelated to current events. Sports? Vacation plans? Kids?
Search for common ground if you do discuss current events. Is there even one current issue that you can agree on? If not, avoid politics altogether.
Respect and empathy are key here, although they may be hard to come by.
Finally, but probably most important, drop the name calling, the labels, and the foul language. They don't help and you might even feel better!
If you don't mind, share some of your own methods for dealing with politics today or feel free to comment on what I shared.
Jim
