Defining America

Defining America is different. It's not meant to persuade you to believe what the author believes. There are no answers here, only questions. Defining America is both a challenge and an opportunity. It challenges every American to define just what America is all about, regardless of what we see on television or read on social media. It’s also an opportunity because the reader has a chance to start from scratch and decide what he or she wants for our country, from choosing leaders to determining how decisions are made by the government. What rights and responsibilities does each citizen have? What should our role be in the world? How do we settle disputes and disagreements among us?

America is very complex- that much I believe we can agree on. We have a very diverse population made up of hundreds of millions of people with many different backgrounds who have different viewpoints and different priorities. These differences have resulted in a nation that appears, at times, to be in turmoil. Other times, it’s clear that Americans embrace our challenges and come together at the most troubling of times. Defining America is your chance to determine our path forward.

THE REAL
CLASSROOM

The Real Classroom is about real teaching in a real classroom in a real school. This isn’t a book filled with educational theory or research. Instead, Jim Sack shares stories and lessons from a long career in teaching so the reader will have a much better understanding of what school is really like.

The Real Classroom is for teachers, those considering a career in education, adults with school-age children, and veteran and retired teachers who will relate to these stories. It’s practical and realistic, with true stories and lessons learned from a career classroom teacher and will serve as a guide for teachers as they navigate through the school year from the first day setting up their classroom until the last day when they’ve packed everything up, along with what should be done over the summer.

The Real Classroom will also help you to decide if teaching is the right choice for you and, if so, what kind of teacher you want to be. It includes stories from the author, but also from other teachers, parents, school personnel, and students, as well as including quotes from students that are funny, perceptive, and informative- with a few “pet peeves” thrown in!
