It's Time...To Address The Fork In The Road

Writer: Jim SackJim Sack

I'd guess that most of us have voted for a losing candidate at one time or another. Sometimes you're just a little disappointed and take a "wait till next time approach". Other times, you're absolutely outraged. The real question here is whether you do anything about a result that you don't like. There are people who make phone calls, write letters, canvass neighborhoods, or take other political actions to address what they consider a poor election result. Then there's me. I get angry, maybe even furious, but I don't do much about it. I may post on facebook or have conversations with friends or family members about an election, but that's been pretty much all I've done in the past. That's where the fork in the road llies. You can either take the fork which signifies no action like I've done, or you can take the other fork and decide to do something about it.

Let's say I continue to do nothing other than vent. There may be good reasons why:

  • I don't get any more aggravated than I am now because I'm not constantly dealing with it.

  • I won't risk losing friendships or, as an author, sales, because of my involvement.

  • It's actually safer for me and my family to just keep my mouth shut.

  • It probably won't make a difference anyway.

  • In some ways I'm a bit of an introvert. I haven't made political phone calls, etc. before because I'm not that comfortable doing it.

Maybe it's time to stand up for what you believe in for the following reasons:

  • If not me, then who?

  • What is that saying, "talk is cheap"? How about "put up or shut up"? It really comes down to not just complaining, but doing something about it.

  • If I'm able to convince even one voter to see a different perspective, it's worth it.

  • At least I can look in the mirror and know I did my part.

To be honest, I'm not sure which direction I'll be going in. I just know that I have to choose which fork in the road to follow.
